Welcome to the always expanding Artists
Corner. This is where you can see an artist's photo where available
along with an artwork catalog for each artist. Just click on his or
her name in the green box at the left to see our current selection of
the artist's work.
This will become a catalog of all our
artists and each individual will have his own link. This should make it
easier to see what's new with your favorite artist.
The mystical beliefs of Voodoo serve as
an endless source of inspiration and some of the most collectable works
are of this genre. Hyppolite was a Voodoo priest, his art was a means of communicating
with an audience both human and spiritual. Today, the artists of the Saint-Soleil
paint portraits of the loas (spirits) with bold colors and intricate patterns.
As well a large group of modern artists can be found, who have fine art
training and paint in a contemporary manner that has a very broad appeal.
Artists like Bernard Sejourne and Jean-Rene Jerome achieved a level of status in their life time
that parallels our sports celebrities.
What one finds in Haiti is an art form
that is as rich in variety as it is in imagination with roots stemming from
a blend of African, French, Spanish and Indian influences.
Most artists in Haiti are self taught and
paint various versions of Eden...
the better life they may have only experienced on a canvas. Ever optimistic,
these artists depict Haiti as a paradise, lush and surreal. Yvon Jean-Pierre and Louis Rosemond are two artists that excel at this style.
Busy market scenes of every day life are also popular subjects, much like
Peter Breugal the Northern Renaissance artist, Haitian artists fill their
canvas with humor and activity. A good example would be the paintings of
Inatace Alphonse, his harvest scenes contain children flying kites
and dancing musicians. |
