Haitian Life Category Description
Category: Paintings - Haitian Life
Description of Category: Everyday activities are the hallmark of this group of artists. Markets, harvest scenes, festivals and depictions of mountain villages abound. The paintings can be subtle and sophisticated as in the works of Claude Dambreville or primitive with bold colors such as the sugar cane harvests of Inatace Alphonse. The artists from the southeast region, Jacmel, will also add a surreal twist to their rendition of the Haitian landscape. Many refer to their paintings as dreamscapes and attempt to show a paradise on earth. But for a country of poor and mostly illiterate citizens, telling a story on canvas is very much a way of communicating or documenting an event. The Haitian Life artist excels at this - sometimes humorous, always poignant and making this genre one of the most popular.
