Mystic Category Description
Category: Paintings - Mystic
Description of Category: The African people brought to Hispanola a rich spiritual heritage; deities and lesser spirits have been respected and celebrated on the island for centuries. Voodoo is often misunderstood and Haitians are reluctant to speak about it. Instead they paint the spirits’ stories. Often these works are some of the most original and highly prized paintings in Haitian art. The spirits or LOAS, are almost channeled on to the canvas by such groups as the Saint-Soleil artists Levoy Exil and Prosper Pierre-Louis. Or as in the Bosch-like works of Roy David Anisey whose detailed depicting of demons have a political overtone. Many artists include subtle Voodoo nuances as in Fritzner Alphonse’s blue faced women. The Goddess of Love, Erzulie, is often shown with blue or green skin and when a woman is painted this way it is said she possesses the deities’ charms.
