Description:
Goddess of Love dons a black hat to ward off bad luck suitors for the maiden in white. Brilliant theme with Smiths intense blue as the dominant color. Born in 1964 in Soissons-la-Montagne, Denis Smith was only 18 years old when he started painting under the leadership of Maud Robart and Jean Claude Garoute known as Tiga. He met the latter during the construction of a house in Soissons-la-Montagne that would later serve as a cultural centre for them. A founding member of Saint-Soleil, noted by André Malraux during his trip to Haiti in 1975, he became one of the most talented of this artistic movement. Denis Smith participated in 1988 with Prospère Pierre-Louis, Louisiana Saint-Fleurant, Levoy Exil, Dieuseul Paul in the group called Cinq Soleils under the leadership of Philippe Bécoulet and Geneviève Hergott, French cooperators. Denis Smiths paintings have the graphic finesse of devotional icons. The Blue Virgin, Erzulie Dantor, transcendent, returns repeatedly in the pictorial space. The color at Smith has the transparency of watercolor colors. Fine line and touch are the most salient codes of Denis Smiths painting. His works are published in important works: André Malraux, the Timeless 1976; Naive art, voodoo art (Jean Marie Drot, 1988); Where Art is joy (Selden Rodman, 1988); the dialogue of reality and imagination (Philippe Bécoulet, 1990); Haitian Painters, Art Circle Editions,2000, Gerald Alexis, ...
