Cap Haitian Category Description
Category: Paintings - Cap Haitian
Description of Category: Cap-Haitian is the capitol city of Haiti... it is also one of the oldest and most charming places in the country. Famous for its gingerbread houses and New Orleans-type setting, plus it is the birthplace of one of Haiti’s most famous artists, Philome Obin (1892-1986). Philome was a self-taught artist whose portraits and historic scenes were executed in an original and naive manner. He painted on mason-board and showed a preference for softer colors. Many of his family members have gone on to paint showing his influence. Most artists from this region cite Philome as their mentor.
