Description:
Bigaud, Wilson (1931–2010) Wilson Bigaud was an integral part of the renaissance of Haitian art. The renowned artist Hector Hyppolite took Bigaud as an apprentice when the latter was only fifteen years old. Bigaud joined the Centre dArt in Port-au-Prince in 1946 and shortly thereafter painted his masterpiece, Miracle at Cana (1950–1951), for the Holy Trinity Cathedral, later destroyed in the great earthquake. In the late 1960s Bigaud suffered a series of nervous breakdowns that interrupted and changed his style, after which he became a recluse. This wonderful work depicts a peaceful morning in the garden. Five hens are scratching for feed while two young chicks enter the yard. Proud rooster grooms himself confident he is the king of the yard. This serene work has the feel of an old world classic painting. The signature indicates it is prior to Bigauds mental breakdown and the subject is such a unique serene painting it could almost be the turning point in his life, a rare gem.
