Description:
The joy of the day shines on the faces of this young couple taking their marriage vows. Paul was famous for capturing scenes of every day life. Since leaving Haiti he has stopped painting. His works are rare and a great addition to any collection. Rich jewel tone colors, nicely framed. Gerard Paul was born in 1943 in Port-au-Prince. Orphaned at the age of six, he was a cabinet maker, a mason, and a house painter. By age 14 he was apprenticed to a carpenter and then to a bricklayer and a house painter. Working at the residence of the German Ambassador, in 1963 he was hired as a servant. Soon after, he showed his first paintings to the wife of the Ambassador, Mrs. Malsy-Minsk. The Ambassador, who ultimately built a large collection of Pauls work, was quick to encourage him in his unique naive style by providing the paints and canvas. Paul later became associated with the Monnin Gallery, and was subsequently shown in many international exhibitions, including the Seraphine Gallery in Paris.
