1928 ~ 2013 Roger Francois was a warmhearted mystic and artist. Woman were his most favorite subjects. This woman carries fresh fruit home from the market for her family. Beautiful painting has vivid colors and is a rare early work. Roger Francois was born around 1928 in the Artibonite plain of central Haiti. He was devoted to the benign spirits of Voudou and began as a wood sculptor. He started painting in the early sixties. A favorite subject was Haitian women, both nudes and market women plus cats, dogs, horses and owls. In the early 1990’s Francois began painting sun and moon heads on human bodies and more surreal voudou paintings. A painting of his hangs in the National Museum, Brussels, Belgium and another was exhibited in the show of Geoffrey Holder’s collection, ?Spirits? at the Katonah Museum of Art, (NY) in May 1991. His work has appeared in books and museum show internationally.
