Al Black is one of the last living Highwaymen artists who is inspiring a new generation to carry on the skills he has learned. His talents have only gotten better with age. To this day, Black, 76, still paints in his small garage in Fort Pierce. When he considers the painting to come alive and “pop” hell sell it. “I’ve sold a painting for 25, 30 thousand,” Black said. All of his depictions of Florida’s landscape come from memory. He calls it a gift from God that he says was used to change his life after a drug addiction led him to prison. “I went from prison to prison painting. And if I went to one prison, they got to see the ones I did in that…they’d ask if I’d come. I’d say you have to ask my warden,” said Black.
